Well, what I do, when I am with someone's parents or somebody who might pay for me, is bring money enough for me, and when the check comes, look at it and if they don't say anything than figure out how much money I need plus tip and tax and then just pay it.
If I am with someone who I am going to pay for, if they offer to pay (you are allowed to ask) or if they start looking like they are going to get money out I just tell them. I would assume that is how other people do it as well.
Or you can be like Heather, and when we get in the car to go out to eat, just say, "I don't have any money."
